Travelling by Sea
This is a very pleasant mode of transport, especially if your intention is to get some rest and relaxation. You could take a leisurely cruise and enter St. Lucia at Pointe Seraphine, which serves as the perfect entry point for all cruise ships. Castries is the chief port of entry for passenger ships while Vieux Fort serves the same purpose for vessels carrying cargo.
Getting Around St. Lucia
Buses
Most buses run up to about 10pm at night. Fridays are an exception, so you can stay out later to start the weekend on a high note. Most buses run between Gros Islet and Castries. It is best to check with locals or your hotel staff since there is no specific schedule for the buses. But when you are spending about EC $1.50 (north to Castries) to EC $8.00 (south to Casteries), do you really care?
Taxis
You can hire a taxi at roadside stands or by calling the company. There are minibuses that can accommodate up to ten people at a time, so if you are travelling in a group, this may be a better option for you. It's not too expensive - EC$120 to the Airport or EC$40 to Rodney Bay (for four people).
Inter-Island Transport
You can start off from either of the two main marinas - Marigot Bay or Rodney Bay. Take the Caribbean Express Catamaran service to Martinique, Dominica or Guadeloupe from St. Lucia. Or simply ask your travel agent to book you on a charter boat. Destination? The Grenadines, Dominica or one of the many other colourful Caribbean destinations.
Automobile Rentals
Driving around St. Lucia may provide you with the perfect opportunity to follow your impulses and enjoy your time. Remember to stick to the left, fasten your seat belt and follow all posted limits. Cars, SUVs or two-wheelers can be rented from one of the many rental companies or be booked by your travel agent, hotel staff or at the airport. It won't cost you too much either - up to about US $400 for a seven-day rental (economy vehicle).
Get Your Drivers License!
You will need an international driving licence for renting a vehicle. If you do not have one, you can obtain a three-month permit for EC$54. Show your current license at the airport, or any immigration or police department, and you are good to go. Do remember to get it stamped by the immigration authorities.
