Most people who are in Castries, the capital city of St. Lucia, are locals; businessmen, workers, etc. There are also some great St. Lucia hotels there, and Castries is a town of diversity and wondrous cuisine - of course, that is due in large part to the fact that the Castries Market boasts the greatest selection of both locally cultivated and imported produce. The majority of the hubbub that keeps the city active for all of daytime is centered around the citys busy port, and if you're looking for a few extra dollars, a short stint as a deckhand on a docked ship is bound to bring you some cash (or it can simply be an exciting experience, whichever way you'd like to view it!). However, although Castries is great to experience, the real St. Lucia is in the little working villages, the plantations and the valleys.
St. Lucia can trace its history well past colonial rule. Its lone inhabitants were the Caribs until the Europeans turned up in 1500. The French arrived to colonize it in 1660 and fought with the British no less than 14 times for control over this paradise. Having passed between the French and the British a number of times, St. Lucia was dubbed 'the Helen of Troy' of islands. St. Lucia was a part of the Federation of the West Indies for four years starting from 1958, and gained independence on 22 February 1979. The close-to 120,000 residents have found more than usual interest in their native land due to the 2007 Cricket World Cup held in the Caribbean.
If you look at a map of St. Lucia, this 27 by 14 mile-long island may seem very small, but it sure packs a punch of wonderful experiences for any visitor. With Barbados to its south and Martinique and St. Vincent on either side, St. Lucia is probably the lesser known island of the Windward Island group of the Lesser Antilles. Providing access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this amazing island holds the power to lure travellers from around the globe. You can also use your St. Lucia holiday to visit some other great Caribbean islands such as Antigua, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Dominica.
